AU appoints Jakaya Kikwete as Horn of Africa envoy

The appointment of Jakaya Kikwete signals renewed commitment by the African Union to advance diplomatic engagement, conflict resolution, and long-term regional stability efforts.

The African Union has appointed former Tanzania president Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete as High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, in a move aimed at strengthening peace, diplomacy and regional stability efforts.

The appointment was announced by African Union Commission chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who said Kikwete will play a central role in addressing complex political, peace and security challenges affecting the region.

Kikwete’s mandate includes advancing preventive diplomacy, facilitating inclusive political dialogue and promoting confidence-building among key stakeholders. The role also focuses on strengthening regional cooperation mechanisms to support long-term peace and stability.

Youssouf said the envoy will help drive coordinated efforts to address ongoing tensions and conflicts in the Horn of Africa, a region that continues to face political transitions and humanitarian challenges.

Kikwete served as Tanzania president from 2005 to 2015 and has remained active in regional diplomacy, bringing years of leadership experience to the new role.

Coordination with regional and global partners

The African Union said the High Representative will work closely with regional and international organisations including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, East African Community, United Nations and the League of Arab States.

This cooperation is expected to enhance coherence and effectiveness in peacebuilding initiatives across the region. The AU emphasised the importance of joint engagement in tackling cross-border challenges and promoting stability.

The Horn of Africa remains a critical focus for diplomatic efforts due to ongoing instability in several countries, as well as security concerns linked to regional conflicts.

The AU highlighted the geopolitical and economic significance of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea corridor, noting their vital role in global trade and maritime security.

Instability in the region can disrupt international shipping routes and affect global commerce, making peace and stability efforts a priority not only for Africa but for the international community.

Kikwete’s appointment comes at a time when the African Union is intensifying its diplomatic engagement in conflict-prone regions, with a focus on African-led solutions.

Youssouf expressed confidence in Kikwete’s ability to deliver results, citing his experience, leadership and diplomatic track record.

He said Kikwete’s role will be key in supporting countries in the region and strengthening collaboration among regional and international partners.

The appointment underscores the AU’s commitment to promoting durable peace, stability and prosperity in one of Africa’s most strategically important regions.
