Rather than hosting an elaborate corporate celebration to commemorate its 15th anniversary, Jumbo Chem Kenya Limited has invested in improving learning conditions for hundreds of students at Kasunguni Secondary School in Makueni County through a comprehensive infrastructure insulation project.
The Nairobi-based manufacturer of thermal insulation, soundproofing and protective packaging solutions completed the insulation of the school’s classrooms, dormitories and dining facilities under its anniversary theme, “15 Years of Insulating Kenya.” The initiative is expected to directly benefit more than 400 students by creating a more conducive environment for learning and accommodation.
For years, students at the school have endured harsh weather conditions due to the predominantly iron-sheet structures that make up much of the institution’s infrastructure. During the day, classroom temperatures often exceeded 34 degrees Celsius, creating uncomfortable conditions that affected concentration and academic performance. At night, temperatures could fall to as low as 14 degrees Celsius, exposing students to cold-related illnesses and discomfort.
To address the challenge, Jumbo Chem installed its flagship Jumbolene high-performance thermal roof insulation throughout the school. The company says the intervention has reduced indoor peak temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius, significantly improving comfort levels for both learners and teachers.
Speaking during the official unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Jumbo Chem Kenya Board Chairman Amb. Dennis Awori said the company deliberately chose to celebrate its milestone by making a lasting contribution to the community.
“As a corporate, we have a responsibility to the communities we operate within, and our ESG goals make that responsibility concrete. Fifteen years of business in Kenya means fifteen years of drawing from Kenyan communities. Kasunguni Secondary School is our way of giving something meaningful back to the community. We chose to mark this milestone not with a celebration, but with an investment in the next generation,” said Awori.
The project was fully funded by Jumbo Chem at no cost to either the school or the Makueni County Government, underscoring the company’s commitment to community development and sustainable corporate citizenship.
Company leaders noted that the initiative reflects the growing importance of the Social pillar within Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments, emphasizing that corporate success should translate into tangible benefits for surrounding communities
According to Awori, the impact of the project extends beyond improved classroom comfort and is expected to contribute to better educational outcomes and long-term socio-economic development.
“Community schools like Kasunguni sit at the intersection of aspiration and limitation. Our hope is simple: that students and teachers feel a tangible, lasting difference. When a child in Makueni gets a better education, that benefit ripples outward to their family, their community and Kenya’s future. That is what the social pillar of our ESG commitment looks like in practice,” he added.
The unveiling ceremony attracted senior officials from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as representatives from the Makueni County Government, highlighting the significance of public-private partnerships in advancing community development initiatives.
As the company embarks on its next phase of growth, Jumbo Chem is encouraging other private sector players to rethink how they celebrate corporate achievements by investing in projects that directly improve lives and strengthen communities.
“Sustainable business must be rooted in community. We exist because of Kenya. The ‘S’ in ESG is perhaps the most immediate opportunity any business has to create visible change. We hope this inspires other corporates to look at the communities closest to them and ask: what can we do?” Awori said.
