Christians mark Palm Sunday as Easter season holy week begins

Easter season, Christians across the world marked Palm Sunday, commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem and ushering in the start of Holy Week.

The day was observed through prayer services, processions and the blessing of palm branches, recalling the biblical moment when crowds welcomed Jesus with palm fronds and shouts of “Hosanna,” meaning “Save us.”

Palm Sunday signals a significant moment in the Christian calendar, blending celebration with reflection as believers prepare for the events leading to Easter.

Holy Week begins with reflection and renewal

In Kenya, churches joined the global observance, with the Legion Maria Church of African Mission calling on believers to look beyond the celebration and embrace deeper spiritual reflection.

Bishop Wycliffe Nyapera of the Legion Maria Thika Diocese urged Christians to examine the strength of their faith, emphasizing the need for consistency in both joyful and challenging times.

“Palm Sunday invites us to look inward. We must ask ourselves whether we remain faithful only in moments of joy or whether we are prepared to walk with Christ through trials, sacrifice and uncertainty,” he said.

Clergy across congregations highlighted the contrast between the crowd’s initial praise of Jesus and their later rejection, describing it as a reminder of the fragile nature of human loyalty.

The palm branches distributed during services were described as symbols of both victory and surrender, reflecting an outward expression of an inward commitment to faith.

Church leaders encouraged believers to carry this commitment into their daily lives by promoting peace, justice and compassion within their communities.

As Holy Week continues, Christians will reflect on key events in the life of Jesus, including the Last Supper, His crucifixion and resurrection. Clergy said the period is not only commemorative but also a time for active spiritual participation through prayer and repentance.

Amid ongoing global challenges, including social and economic uncertainty, faith leaders urged believers to embrace unity and extend support to those in need.

They also encouraged Christians to dedicate time to silence, prayer and reflection throughout the week, describing Holy Week as a sacred opportunity for spiritual growth and transformation.

The observance from Palm Sunday to Easter remains a journey of both sacrifice and hope, calling on believers to renew their faith and commitment to the teachings of the Gospel.
