The Kenya Revenue Authority has surpassed the Ksh2 trillion mark in cumulative revenue collection for the first nine months of the 2025/26 financial year, signaling steady growth in tax performance.
In a statement released Tuesday, 7 April 2026, KRA announced it collected Ksh2.038 trillion as of 31 March 2026 against a target of Ksh2.122 trillion, translating to a 96% performance rate. The figures mark an increase from Ksh1.829 trillion collected during a similar period in the previous financial year.
Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga attributed the improved performance to ongoing institutional reforms aimed at simplifying tax compliance and expanding digital integration. Key among these initiatives is the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System eTIMS, which has enhanced invoice transparency and reduced value added tax fraud.
KRA also highlighted the success of its GavaConnect Developer Portal, an enterprise API platform that now hosts more than 2,500 developers. The platform enables businesses and fintech firms to integrate tax services directly into their systems, improving efficiency and compliance.
Customs operations recorded a strong performance, collecting Ksh733.7 billion and exceeding expectations with a 100.9% rate. This represents an increase from Ksh647.6 billion collected in the same period last year.
Domestic taxes remained the largest contributor, generating Ksh1.301 trillion, reflecting a 10.4% growth year on year. Revenue collected on behalf of other government agencies rose to Ksh204.5 billion, marking a 10.7% increase.
Exchequer revenue for the National Treasury stood at Ksh1.834 trillion, slightly below target with a 95.5% performance rate.
KRA warned of potential revenue pressures linked to global developments, particularly disruptions stemming from conflict in the Middle East. Petroleum imports, which contribute about Ksh30 billion in monthly taxes, are facing delays. Imports from the region, which generate roughly Ksh273 billion annually, are also at risk due to declining shipments.
To enhance taxpayer experience, KRA introduced a WhatsApp based filing service powered by the Shuru AI chatbot, allowing users to file returns, access pre filled data and generate compliance certificates seamlessly.
