Gachagua confirmed Kega’s enrollment through his official X account, describing the DCP as “the home of progressive leaders who desire leadership in the future.” The announcement comes as Kenya’s opposition parties seek to consolidate their influence ahead of future elections.
“Welcome home Hon @kaninikega1. @DCP_Democracy is the home of progressive leaders who desire leadership in the future,” Gachagua wrote in his post welcoming the seasoned politician.
Political Veterans Flock to New Party
The DCP also announced the recruitment of former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, signaling the party’s ambition to attract established professionals. Gachagua emphasized the party’s need for “great legal minds for Legislation, Representation and Oversight,” praising Havi as “one of the greatest legal minds in the country” as he pursues a seat representing Westlands constituency.
While Kega has not issued a comprehensive statement explaining his departure from Jubilee, political analysts suggest his move could significantly boost DCP’s credibility, particularly in the politically influential Mt Kenya region where he maintains substantial grassroots support.
Two-Decade Career in Kenyan Politics
Kega’s political journey spans more than 20 years, beginning with unsuccessful bids for the Kieni parliamentary seat in 2002 and 2007. His persistence yielded results in 2013 when he secured the constituency on The National Alliance ticket, defeating incumbent Namesyus Warugongo. He successfully defended the seat in 2017 under Jubilee Party.
During his parliamentary tenure, Kega emerged as a staunch ally of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, becoming a prominent figure in the “Kieleweke” faction. He played a crucial role mobilizing support for the 2018 political détente between Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga, and later backed the Azimio la Umoja coalition in the 2022 general election.
From Parliamentary Defeat to Regional Assembly
The 2022 polls proved challenging for Azimio-aligned candidates in Mt Kenya, where the United Democratic Alliance swept most constituencies. Kega lost his Kieni seat to Njoroge Wainaina, ending his decade-long parliamentary career.
However, Kega quickly rebounded, winning election to the East African Legislative Assembly in November 2022, maintaining his presence on the regional political stage. His entry into DCP represents his latest strategic repositioning as Kenya’s political landscape continues evolving.
