A dramatic confrontation between two outspoken Orange Democratic Movement figures at a popular Lebanese restaurant in Kilimani has sparked a police probe, amid claims of a firearm being brandished in a heated political row.
Embakasi East member of parliament Babu Owino has accused Kileleshwa ward member of county assembly Robert Alai of drawing a pistol and assaulting him during an encounter on 3 January at Cedars restaurant along Lenana Road.
In a statement issued on 4 January, Owino said he arrived alone at the venue shortly before 4.00pm for a private meeting with a senior clergyman, having released his security detail for the holidays.
After about 20 minutes, as he prepared to depart, Owino spotted acquaintances at an adjacent table, including Alai, and approached to greet them.
The exchange turned hostile when Alai allegedly accused him of orchestrating social media attacks on his wife – claims Owino denied, insisting he does not know the woman and avoids targeting families in politics.
Owino alleged Alai then pushed him, drew a firearm and struck him on the chest and jaw in view of patrons.
A brief calm followed after intervention, with the pair even sitting momentarily. However, Alai allegedly poured water on Owino’s face, prompting the MP to leave and report the incident at Kilimani police station.
Police investigation
Kilimani sub-county police commander Patricia Yegon confirmed both leaders recorded statements. Officers are examining CCTV footage, interviewing witnesses and staff, and have confiscated Alai’s firearm.
Alai has dismissed the allegations, stating he will give his account at the appropriate time while accusing Owino of provocation.
Underlying tensions
Eyewitness accounts in local media link the clash to recent online criticism of Alai’s family, reportedly tied to activist Maverick Aoko and perceived political rivalries.
The incident highlights firearm possession concerns among leaders and intra-party frictions in Orange Democratic Movement, particularly with speculation around the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial contest, in which Owino has shown interest.
Both politicians are known for bold styles: Owino for youth mobilisation and past firearm-related cases, Alai for trenchant commentary on X.
As the probe continues, the episode exposes the fragile blend of personal animosities and ambition in Kenya’s opposition politics.
