Vijana na Ruto calls for parliamentary action against Starehe MP Amos Mwago

Political lobby group Vijana na Ruto has called on parliamentary leaders to take action against Starehe Member of Parliament Amos Mwago over remarks it said were directed at President William Ruto during a political engagement in Nakuru last week.

Political lobby group Vijana na Ruto has called on parliamentary leaders to take action against Starehe Member of Parliament Amos Mwago over remarks it said were directed at President William Ruto during a political engagement in Nakuru last week.

The group said it was concerned by reports that Mwago referred to Ruto as “taka taka”, arguing that political criticism was legitimate but should not extend to personal insults against the office of the president.

“Political criticism is legitimate and protected; personal insults directed at the institution of the presidency are not,” said Isaac Tarangwe National chairperson, Vijana na Ruto.

Tarangwe urged the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah to formally address the matter in parliament.

He also called for Mwago to be given an opportunity to clarify whether he made the reported remarks and, if confirmed, to publicly apologise to Ruto and the nation before being allowed to address the House.

The lobby group also asked the Speaker’s office to treat the matter as one of parliamentary decorum, saying elected leaders should uphold the dignity of national institutions regardless of political differences.

The chairperson said failing to address such conduct could establish a precedent that undermines respect for the presidency.

In their statement, they also urged Kenyan youth to support Ruto’s development agenda while holding leaders accountable irrespective of their political party, region or position.

Vijana na Ruto said young people should reject what it described as political opportunism and remain organised in supporting leaders who uphold their commitments to voters.

The group said it remained committed to a “disciplined, accountable and united” political movement, adding that respect for national institutions, including the presidency, was non-negotiable.
