How Kalonzo’s influence is surging before 2027 elections

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has emerged as a central figure in Kenyan politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election, courted by both the ruling coalition and a strengthening opposition alliance.

The 71-year-old veteran politician, a former vice president, commands a solid base in the Ukambani region and draws growing national attention as parties maneuver for alliances.

Musyoka formally launched his presidential bid in October 2025, accepting his party’s endorsement at a national delegates conference in Nairobi. He has ruled out serving as anyone’s running mate, declaring his intent to contest the top seat directly against President William Ruto.

His influence stems from Ukambani’s substantial voting bloc. The three counties of Kitui, Machakos and Makueni had roughly 1.7 million registered voters in the 2022 tally by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, making the region a key swing area. The Kamba community’s presence in Nairobi further bolsters Musyoka’s leverage.

Opposition backing grows

Kalonzo Musyoka emerges as Kenya’s key political kingmaker, courted by opposition and ruling coalition ahead of 2027 presidential election.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has become one of Musyoka’s strongest advocates within the United Opposition coalition. Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, has pledged to deliver millions of votes from the Mount Kenya region to support Musyoka.

At a church service in Kasarani earlier this month, Gachagua dismissed government efforts to woo Musyoka, calling their relationship “family” rather than purely political. He has outlined qualities that make Musyoka the opposition’s strongest candidate, including loyalty and experience.

The United Opposition includes parties led by Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua and others. Leaders have agreed to field joint candidates in by-elections as they build toward a unified front against Ruto in 2027.

Musyoka has toured regions like Machakos and the Coast, urging youth voter registration and criticizing the government’s economic policies. He recently met Kikuyu elders in Kiambu to discuss national challenges.

Ruling side’s overtures

President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition has made repeated approaches to Musyoka, viewing his alignment as a potential blow to the opposition. Allies visited his home area in October, urging him to join the government for “development.”

Musyoka and his supporters have rebuffed these advances. Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has insisted Musyoka will run for president in 2027.

Some critics, including Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya, have warned Musyoka against opposition alliances, suggesting cooperation with the government would benefit Ukambani.

Challenges ahead

Despite the momentum, Musyoka faces hurdles. Internal opposition tensions persist, with some questioning ties to certain figures. Recent by-elections saw mixed results for opposition candidates, highlighting mobilization challenges.

Analysts note funding, youth turnout and coalition unity as key tests. Musyoka has rebranded his party to appeal to younger voters and engaged the diaspora during a UK tour.

As Kenya approaches 2027, Musyoka’s decisions — whether to lead a united opposition ticket, run independently or resist government overtures — could significantly shape the presidential contest. His surging profile underscores a shifting political landscape where regional strongholds and cross-ethnic alliances will prove decisive.
