Martha Karua rejects zoning as PLP intensifies 2027 recruitment push

Martha Karua dismisses zoning proposals while spearheading a nationwide PLP recruitment campaign aimed at expanding grassroots support and strengthening opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The People’s Liberation Party has stepped up a nationwide recruitment drive in a strategic push to expand its support base and increase visibility ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a series of engagements in Nyeri County, PLP leader Martha Karua said the campaign is part of a broader plan to solidify the party’s national footprint and reinforce its role within the United Opposition coalition.

Karua urged Kenyans across all regions to enlist as PLP members, emphasizing the party’s commitment to democratic values and inclusive participation. She said the recruitment drive is designed to empower grassroots supporters and prepare the party for competitive electoral contests.

Karua said the party is building a national movement anchored on transparency, accountability and the will of the people, adding that its structures are being strengthened to support candidates across the country.

At the same time, she voiced strong opposition to zoning arrangements proposed by some affiliate parties within the opposition coalition. Zoning involves political agreements that allocate specific regions or seats to particular parties or candidates.

Karua cautioned that such arrangements risk undermining democratic participation by limiting voter choice and potentially locking out qualified candidates from contesting in certain areas.

She said democracy must allow citizens to freely choose their leaders based on merit, noting that zoning denies voters that right.

Reaffirming the party’s readiness for the upcoming elections, Karua said PLP will field candidates for all elective positions nationwide, signaling confidence in its grassroots mobilization efforts and organizational capacity.

Karua also positioned herself as a leading presidential contender, pledging to prioritize integrity, accountability and good governance if elected. She said institutional reforms would be central to tackling corruption and restoring trust in government.

The recruitment campaign caravan traversed key towns in Nyeri County, including Karatina, Nyeri Town and Othaya, where party officials engaged residents and mobilized support at the grassroots level.
