Nyakach politics intensifies as Owili leads Kisumu 2027 Governor race push

Political tensions are rising in Nyakach Constituency as three senior leaders position themselves for the Kisumu governor’s seat in 2027, prompting elders to call for unity to avoid splitting the vote.

Deputy Governor Mathew Owili, Senator Tom Ojienda, and Nyakach Member of Parliament Aduma Owuor have all declared interest in succeeding Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, setting up a closely watched contest in the lakeside county.

Community elders have intervened in recent weeks, urging the three aspirants to agree on a single candidate to strengthen Nyakach’s chances against rivals from other regions.

“Our numbers are strong, but only if we speak with one voice. Division will only benefit our competitors,” one elder involved in the consultations said.

The appeal reflects longstanding political dynamics in Kisumu, where voting patterns often align along regional and clan lines. Leaders from the Kano and Seme areas have previously held the governorship, and potential candidates from Kano, including Joshua Oron and Ken Obura, are already mobilizing support.

Pressure is also mounting from local opinion leaders, who warn that prolonged negotiations could undermine Nyakach’s influence. A group led by engineer Vincent K’odera has called for swift agreement, signaling readiness to step in if consensus efforts stall.

“We cannot afford endless talks while others are organizing. If leaders cannot agree, the people will decide for them,” K’odera said at a recent forum.

Owili is widely viewed by observers as open to a consensus arrangement, with allies describing him as supportive of unity efforts. His backers cite his role in the current county administration, highlighting development initiatives undertaken during his tenure.

Ojienda and Owuor, however, appear to be pursuing independent campaigns. Ojienda has increased his public visibility across the county, a move his supporters describe as voter engagement. Owuor is seen by analysts as relying on established political networks within Nyakach.

As the race takes shape, candidates’ development records are emerging as a key issue among voters. While Owili’s supporters highlight his involvement in county projects, critics of his rivals argue their impact on development is less visible.

Analysts warn that Nyakach’s biggest challenge may be internal competition. A divided vote among the three candidates could give an advantage to more unified blocs from other parts of Kisumu.

“The arithmetic is clear. Three strong candidates from one constituency could easily cancel each other out,” said a local political observer.

With the election still more than a year away, Nyakach faces a critical decision: consolidate support behind one candidate or risk losing influence in a fragmented race.
