Kenya has stepped up its digital diplomacy efforts following a new partnership agreement with Thailand aimed at boosting innovation, trade, and investment in the technology sector.
The initiative gained momentum during the Thailand Kenya Business Matching and Digital Partnership 2026 forum held in Nairobi, where policymakers and private sector leaders from both countries met to explore opportunities in the digital economy. According to the State Department for Foreign Affairs, the collaboration reflects a broader strategy to position the country as a regional technology hub.
A high level Thai delegation led by the Director General of the Department of International Trade arrived in Nairobi on 3 April 2026 to spearhead the discussions. The forum brought together 14 Thai ICT firms and about 50 Kenyan technology companies, facilitating business matchmaking, partnerships, and knowledge exchange.
Kenya delegation was led by Evans Maturu, alongside Ambassador Lucy Kiruthu and senior officials from the ICT and Trade ministries. Cabinet Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy William Kabogo also attended, underscoring the government commitment to accelerating digital transformation.
Officials said the strong turnout reflects the growing importance of digital economies in shaping global trade and investment flows.
Discussions centered on expanding ICT infrastructure, including grassroots level digital development at the ward level. Participants also explored opportunities across key sectors such as trade, tourism, and agriculture, where technology is increasingly driving efficiency and competitiveness.
The partnership aligns with Kenya broader digital agenda, which aims to enhance connectivity, innovation ecosystems, and digital skills development nationwide.
Both countries are preparing to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in July 2027, with officials expressing optimism about deepening cooperation through innovation led initiatives. The partnership is expected to open new channels for investment and strengthen bilateral ties in emerging technologies.
Analysts say the move signals Kenya growing role in digital diplomacy as it seeks to leverage international partnerships to drive economic growth and position itself within the global digital landscape.
