Libya recorded natural gas consumption of 1.082 billion cubic feet over a 24-hour period, according to the latest figures released by the National Oil Corporation (NOC), with electricity generation accounting for the largest share of demand.
The NOC’s daily energy statistics showed that the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) remained the country’s biggest natural gas consumer, using the fuel to operate power generation stations and support electricity production.
GECOL consumed 917.19 million cubic feet of natural gas during the reporting period. The electricity provider also relied on additional fuels, including 16,617 barrels of crude oil and 9,009 metric tonnes of diesel, to maintain power output.
Industrial sectors record demand
Industrial facilities accounted for a smaller portion of Libya’s natural gas consumption, with cement plants using 85.27 million cubic feet during the 24-hour period.
Iron and steel factories, together with other industrial users, consumed 73.086 million cubic feet of natural gas, according to NOC data. The supply remains important for maintaining industrial operations and supporting economic activity in the country.
Other sectors recorded combined consumption of 7.14 million cubic feet during the same period.
Energy supply remains a priority
The latest figures highlight Libya’s continued reliance on natural gas to meet domestic energy needs, particularly for electricity generation. The country holds significant natural gas reserves, but production and supply have faced challenges due to infrastructure limitations, operational disruptions and years of political instability.
The NOC has continued publishing regular energy data as part of efforts to provide greater transparency around Libya’s oil and gas sector.
With electricity demand expected to increase due to population growth and industrial expansion, natural gas is likely to remain central to Libya’s energy strategy. Authorities have been working to improve production capacity, strengthen infrastructure and secure more reliable fuel supplies for power plants and industrial users.
The latest consumption figures underline the dominant role of natural gas in Libya’s energy system and the importance of investment in the sector to support future economic growth.
