Matharu ESP market in Uasin Gishu nears official handover

The completed market is expected to improve trading facilities, support local businesses and create a more organised commercial space for residents.

The Matharu Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Uasin Gishu County has been completed and is awaiting official handover, marking the latest step in government efforts to modernise trading facilities for small-scale businesses.

The project, which broke ground in May 2024, is part of a nationwide programme aimed at improving market infrastructure and providing traders with safer, more dignified spaces to conduct business.

Located in Kesses Sub-county, Matharu is a high-density peri-urban trading centre serving a growing population and surrounding communities.

The market has been designed to accommodate more than 300 traders and includes modern stalls, a water reticulation system, perimeter fencing and an open-air section intended to provide flexibility for different types of vendors.

The development is expected to provide traders with a more organised commercial environment while improving access to basic amenities and strengthening the overall appearance and functionality of the trading centre.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has coordinated local frameworks to support the safe and orderly operation of the facility.

The arrangements are intended to enhance security for traders and customers, improve order within the market and build confidence among businesses using the new facility.

The completion comes as Kenya continues to invest in market infrastructure as part of broader efforts to support micro, small and informal enterprises, which provide livelihoods for millions of people.

For traders in Matharu, the new market is expected to provide a more secure setting for businesses while creating a centralised space where customers can access a wider range of goods and services.
