Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has moved to push Parliament back into session over the rising cost of fuel, warning that the continued increase in pump prices risks worsening the economic pressure already facing millions of Kenyans.
In a statement shared with media outlets, a letter written by Nyoro to the Speaker of the National Assembly Rt Hon Moses Wetangula, requested the urgent recall of Parliament from recess, preferably on Monday, to consider proposed amendments aimed at reducing the price of petroleum products.
The legislator said the proposals seek to cushion households, businesses and the transport sector from the ripple effects of high fuel costs, which continue to push up the prices of basic commodities and services across the country.
Among the changes proposed is an amendment to the Value Added Tax Act to remove the 8 percent VAT charged on fuel products, making Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene VAT exempt. According to Nyoro, the proposal would reduce the price of Super Petrol by approximately Ksh 15.87 per litre and Diesel by nearly Ksh 17.99 per litre.
He has also proposed a Ksh 7 reduction in the Road Maintenance Levy Fund through the revocation of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund Imposition of Levy Order, 2024. Nyoro argued that lowering the levy would ease pressure on transport costs and help stabilize prices of essential goods.
The Kiharu MP further noted that the proposal to inject an additional Ksh 5 billion into diesel subsidies does not necessarily require Parliamentary approval, opening the door for faster implementation of the intervention.
Nyoro maintained that the proposed measures could substantially reduce fuel prices and protect the economy from inflationary shocks that continue to affect businesses and ordinary citizens.
The call for the recall of Parliament comes amid growing concern over the rising cost of living, with fuel prices remaining a major concern for many Kenyans.
In recent months, Nyoro has increasingly positioned himself as a strong voice on economic matters, frequently advocating for policies aimed at easing the financial burden on wananchi and stabilizing the economy.
