A 32-year-old Canadian national has been charged with terrorism and several related offences following a violent machete attack at Masjid Westlands mosque in Nairobi on 28 February 2026.
The suspect, identified as Mohamed Mohamed alias Mohamed Abdul Mohamed, pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the Kahawa Law Courts on 2 April 2026.
Prosecutors said he faces nine counts, including committing a terrorist act, assault causing actual bodily harm, possession of fake currency and unlawful presence in Kenya. The charges follow investigations by security agencies into the early morning incident.
Attack inside mosque
Investigators allege the suspect entered the mosque at about 6.00am while posing as a worshipper attending Fajr prayers. Authorities say that once inside, he locked the main entrance, drew a machete and attacked congregants.
Five people were injured before the suspect was subdued by worshippers, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Police officers from Kileleshwa Police Station responded shortly after and re-arrested the suspect at the scene. Officers also recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the assault.
The injured victims were taken to hospitals within Nairobi County for treatment. Authorities did not immediately disclose their conditions but confirmed they received medical attention.
The accused has been remanded at Kamiti Maximum Prison pending further proceedings. The case is scheduled for mention on 13 April 2026 for a pre-bail report.
Officials say investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the attack.
