Wiper Democratic Movement candidate Antony Kisoi has won the Mumbuni North ward by-election in Machakos county, reinforcing the party’s stronghold in the Ukambani region.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared Kisoi winner on Friday morning after he garnered 3,849 votes, more than 1,000 votes ahead of his nearest challenger.
Harrison Ngumbau Wambua of Maendeleo Chap Chap party finished second with 2,766 votes, while Misi Mutua of the ruling United Democratic Alliance came a distant third with 809 votes. Independent candidate Peter Kyulu took fourth place with 118 votes.
Voter turnout stood at 47.8%, with 7,597 valid votes cast out of 15,879 registered voters in the ward.
Jubilant scenes as results announced
Supporters erupted in celebration the moment the returning officer read out the final tally at Mumbuni Primary School. Hundreds of Wiper faithful wearing purple party regalia danced in the streets as motorcades blared music and hooted in victory.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, a senior Wiper leader and close ally of opposition chief Kalonzo Musyoka, joined the revelry and congratulated the winner.
“The people of Machakos still trust Wiper to deliver development,” Ndeti told the cheering crowd. “This is a strong message to our competitors – Mumbuni North has spoken clearly.”
Political implications for 2027
The seat fell vacant following the death in August of former MCA Francis Ngunga, who also flew the Wiper flag. Analysts say the comfortable victory strengthens Kalonzo Musyoka’s hold on the region as he prepares another presidential bid in 2027.
For President William Ruto government and United Democratic Alliance, the third-place finish highlights continuing difficulties in penetrating the Kamba vote despite repeated campaigns in the area since 2022.
Kisoi pledges service delivery
Kisoi, a businessman contesting elective office for the first time, had campaigned on improved water supply, better roads and youth employment.
He will be sworn in next week and serve the remaining two years of the current term.
“This win belongs to the people of Mumbuni North. I will not let you down,” the MCA-elect told supporters shortly after his victory.
