Infotrak: 55% of Kenyans unable to afford holiday celebrations

More than half of Kenyans plan to skip Christmas and New Year celebrations this year as economic pressures bite, a new survey shows.

An opinion poll by Infotrak Research & Consulting released on Wednesday found that 55% of respondents will not mark the holidays, while 45% intend to celebrate. This is a slight improvement from 2024, when 60% said they would not take part.

Financial hardship drives subdued festivities

Among those opting out, 78% cited inability to afford expenses as the main reason. Sixteen per cent had no interest, and 11% said they would be working during the period.

Despite some economic indicators showing improvement, high living costs continue to strain household budgets, forcing many to prioritise essentials.

Regional and demographic divides

Regional differences are clear. Western recorded the highest rate of non-celebrants at 68%, with only 32% planning festivities. Nyanza showed more optimism, with 52% set to celebrate against 48% abstaining.

Age also matters. The 46-55 group is most likely to skip celebrations, weighed down by family obligations. Younger respondents aged 18-26 are more inclined to join in, reflecting greater hope among the youth.

Modest plans for those celebrating

For the 45% who will mark the season, plans remain low-key and centred on family. Fifty-three per cent aim to spend time with relatives – down from 63% in 2024 – and 31% will attend church or prayer meetings.

Twenty per cent plan to meet friends, while 11% intend to travel. Smaller numbers mentioned partying or drinking (7%), staying home (6%), or visiting the sick and children’s homes (2%).

The drop in family gatherings highlights how financial constraints are reshaping traditions, shifting focus to simpler, more meaningful observances.
