The Kenya School of Government (KSG) marked a historic milestone as it celebrated 100 years of excellence in leadership development, governance and public service training, reaffirming its commitment to shaping a modern, innovative and responsive public sector for generations to come.
The centenary celebrations were presided over by Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Geoffrey Ruku, who was the Chief Guest and represented President William Ruto in absentia.
The celebrations brought together a distinguished gathering of leaders and stakeholders, including Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Public Service and Performance Management Dr. Jane Kere Imbunya, Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development Shadrack Mwadime, Director General of the Kenya School of Government Prof. Nura Mohamed, PhD, EBS, governors, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, academia, KSG alumni and senior government officials.
In his keynote address, Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku hailed the Kenya School of Government as the cornerstone of public sector capacity development, saying the institution has remained instrumental in nurturing generations of dedicated and competent public servants.
“Over the past century, KSG has equipped generations of public servants with the knowledge, skills, values and leadership needed to serve Kenyans with professionalism, integrity and dedication. Indeed, the nature and character of the services offered by the public service largely depend on the quality of training, research and consultancy services that the school offers.”
The Cabinet Secretary underscored the indispensable role of a capable public service in driving national transformation, noting that the Government’s development agenda can only succeed through a highly skilled and ethical workforce.
“The success of any government’s agenda depends on the capacity of its public service. Policies and programmes can only transform lives when implemented by competent, ethical and innovative public servants.”
As part of the celebrations, Prof. Nura Mohamed led the Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretaries and other invited guests on a tour of the newly unveiled Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga Leadership Centre, a landmark facility established to strengthen executive leadership development, governance research and public sector capacity building.
The celebrations also showcased KSG’s growing investment in youth empowerment through the Under the Tree Series, an initiative designed to mentor and inspire emerging leaders, as well as the Centre for Customer Service Excellence, which seeks to entrench professionalism, efficiency and citizen centred service delivery across public institutions.
Addressing the celebrations, Mohamed articulated the institution’s bold aspirations for the future, affirming that KSG is determined to remain at the forefront of governance transformation and institutional excellence.
“Our vision for the future of governance is one focused on shaping emerging challenges, complemented by groundbreaking leadership, policy innovation and strong public institutions that will define the next century of public service in Kenya. A century of excellence.”
He said the institution would continue investing in leadership development, policy innovation, research and institutional resilience to equip public servants with the competencies required to navigate the increasingly dynamic governance landscape.
The celebrations served not only as a reflection on KSG’s remarkable legacy over the past century but also as a declaration of its renewed commitment to building a professional, innovative and responsive public service capable of accelerating Kenya’s socioeconomic transformation.
Held under the theme “Miaka Moja Pamoja: A Century of Excellence,” the celebrations reaffirmed the Kenya School of Government’s position as the country’s premier institution for public sector training and leadership development while charting an ambitious course towards the next century of excellence in governance and public service.
