Kenya’s National Assembly is in mourning following the sudden death on Saturday of nominated lawmaker Denar Joseph Hamisi.
The 56-year-old parliamentarian passed away around 7:00 am, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, announced in an official statement. The cause of death has not been made public.
“His demise is a profound loss to Parliament and the nation,” Wetang’ula said, praising Hamisi’s humility and dedication to public service. “His contributions have left an indelible mark both within the House and in the wider national community.”
Hamisi was nominated to the National Assembly in 2022 by the Amani National Congress (ANC) party, led by former vice president Musalia Mudavadi. During his tenure, he served on the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture and the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.
Wetang’ula extended heartfelt condolences to the late MP’s family and friends on behalf of the entire House. “We have lost a steadfast servant of the people,” he added.
In a swift response, the Speaker appointed a parliamentary team, led by Deputy Majority Leader Owen Baya, to coordinate with the family and organise a befitting send-off for the fallen lawmaker.
Born in 1969 in Kinango, Kwale County, Hamisi had a long and distinguished career in both public administration and the private sector before entering elective politics.
A graduate of Mombasa Baptist High School, he held a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management and a Master of International Business Administration from the United States International University (USIU), as well as a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi.
His public service record included stints as director of the Coast Development Authority (2007–2010), commissioner at the former Electoral Commission of Kenya (2007–2008), board member of the Kenya Airports Authority (2009–2012), and council member at the universities of Nairobi and Moi.
Colleagues described Hamisi as soft-spoken yet firm in his convictions, with a particular passion for youth empowerment and coastal development issues.
As news of his passing spread across the political divide, tributes poured in from across the country, underscoring the respect he commanded among peers.
The National Assembly is expected to hold a special sitting in the coming days to honour his memory. Funeral arrangements will be announced once the parliamentary liaison team concludes consultations with the family.
Hamisi is survived by his wife and children.
