NTSA launches real-time traffic fines to boost road enforcement

New automated platform sends instant SMS alerts to motorists who violate traffic rules, giving drivers seven days to settle penalties.

Kenya transport regulator has activated a new automated system that instantly notifies motorists of traffic violations through SMS alerts.

The National Transport and Safety Authority said on 9 March 2026 that the Instant Fines Traffic Management System is now operational across the country.

The authority said the digital platform is designed to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability in traffic enforcement by minimizing human involvement.

“The Instant Fines Traffic Management System is now live. The system will automatically issue traffic violation notifications via SMS to motorists where applicable,” NTSA said in a public notice.

The move forms part of broader efforts by the regulator to modernize traffic management systems and strengthen compliance with road safety rules.

Fully automated traffic enforcement

NTSA said the newly launched platform detects traffic violations automatically and immediately sends notifications to motorists.

According to the authority, the system operates without human intervention, a move expected to reduce disputes often linked to manual traffic enforcement.

“This process is fully automated and operates without human intervention, ensuring greater transparency, efficiency and accountability in traffic enforcement,” NTSA said.

Officials believe the new platform will streamline how traffic offences are recorded and handled while strengthening trust in enforcement procedures.

Drivers who receive violation alerts will be required to settle the fines within seven days using designated payment channels.

NTSA said motorists will pay the penalties through the branch network of KCB Group.

“All fines issued through the system can be paid through the branch network of KCB Group within seven days,” the authority said.

The regulator noted that the automated system is expected to simplify the process of issuing and settling fines while ensuring drivers receive notifications instantly.

Penalties for delayed payments

NTSA warned motorists that failure to pay the fines within the seven-day period will attract additional penalties.

“Failure to settle the fine within the seven days will result in the amount due earning interest,” the authority said.

The authority added that drivers or vehicles with outstanding penalties will be restricted from accessing services on NTSA digital platforms until the fines are cleared.

“In addition, the vehicle or the driver with a pending fine will not be able to transact on NTSA service platforms until the fine is settled,” NTSA said.

NTSA urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations and respond promptly to official notifications sent through the new system.

The authority said further updates regarding the implementation of the platform will be communicated through official government channels.
