More than 100 mechanics from across the North Rift converged in Eldoret on Sunday as Vivo Energy Kenya honoured the men and women whose expertise keeps the country’s transport, agriculture, manufacturing and business sectors running efficiently during the second edition of the Mechanics Wellness Day.
Held under the theme “Celebrating the People Behind Kenya’s Mobility Ecosystem,” the event recognised the indispensable role mechanics play in powering Kenya’s economy while reaffirming Shell Lubricants’ long-term commitment to their health, professional development and overall wellbeing.
The colourful event brought together mechanics, industry partners and their families for a day of health screening, sports, recreation and professional engagement, highlighting the often-overlooked contribution of mechanics in ensuring the safe movement of people, goods and essential services across the country.
Speaking during the event, Vivo Energy Kenya’s Lubricants and LPG Sales and Marketing Manager, Stephen Gikonyo, described mechanics as the backbone of Kenya’s mobility ecosystem, saying their dedication and technical expertise are fundamental to the country’s economic growth.
“This day is about celebrating and thanking the skilled men and women whose hands keep Kenya moving. Behind every safe journey, every successful delivery and every successful harvest is a mechanic whose expertise makes it possible. Through Shell Lubricants, we are proud to stand alongside these professionals by investing not only in high-quality products but also in their health, skills and wellbeing,” said Gikonyo.
He noted that beyond supplying world-class lubricants, Vivo Energy Kenya continues to empower mechanics through technical training, product knowledge programmes and safety education, enabling workshops to improve service delivery while helping motorists make informed vehicle maintenance decisions.
The wellness initiative also underscored the importance of preventive healthcare for mechanics, who routinely work in physically demanding environments.
Participants benefited from comprehensive medical screening and health awareness sessions aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and early detection of occupational health risks.
Ezra Omwancha of Equity Afya observed that mechanics frequently face occupational hazards, including long working hours, heavy lifting and prolonged exposure to strenuous conditions, making regular health checks essential to safeguarding their wellbeing and productivity.
The day also featured football matches, pool and darts competitions, indoor games and networking sessions that strengthened camaraderie among mechanics and industry stakeholders before culminating in an awards ceremony recognising outstanding performers in the various sporting and recreational activities.
As Kenya’s mobility ecosystem continues to evolve, Vivo Energy Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to investing in the people who keep the nation’s wheels turning.
