Governor Anne Waiguru declares Deputy President ambitions

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has formally declared her ambition to become Kenya’s Deputy President, signaling a political shift ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking to residents in Ngariama, Gichugu Constituency on 31 March, Waiguru positioned herself as a contender for the country second highest office, emphasizing leadership and regional representation.

Her announcement places her among leaders expected to influence Kenya next political transition, as succession politics begin to take shape across the country.

Rising national ambitions

Waiguru declaration marks a transition from regional leadership to national politics. The second term governor framed her bid as part of efforts to ensure Mt Kenya retains influence within government.

“I will remain in government, and at the bargaining table I am there, holding it for the people of Kirinyaga and Mt Kenya,” she said.

She underscored the need for strategic alignment, noting that political success depends on broader national support.

“Our votes alone cannot make a president. We need other communities just as they need us,” she said.

Waiguru also appealed to local pride, presenting her ambition as an opportunity for the region to secure a stronger voice in national leadership.

“Wouldn’t you be happy if your daughter gets a higher position?” she asked.

She has previously stated that Kirinyaga County is capable of producing the next Deputy President, reinforcing her message of local empowerment within national politics.

Her declaration is expected to intensify competition within Mt Kenya, a region that remains central in determining electoral outcomes.

With growing national visibility and experience in government, Waiguru is positioning herself as a key figure in Kenya evolving political landscape.
