Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) Party Leader HE.Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has unveiled a revamped leadership structure, appointing four prominent figures to key positions as he intensifies efforts to consolidate the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Vice President announced the appointments during a press briefing in Nairobi on Friday, saying the changes were part of a mandate bestowed upon him by the WPF National Delegates Congress held in October 2025.
The appointments, which take effect immediately, are expected to inject fresh impetus into the party’s organisational machinery as Kalonzo simultaneously pursues a broader political architecture aimed at establishing what he termed a United Alternative Government-in-Waiting.
Former Cabinet Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan Development and two-term Kigumo MP Hon. Jamleck Irungu Kamau, EGH, has been appointed WPF Chairman. Kamau is also a former Commissioner of the Public Service Commission and former National Vice-Chairman of the Party of National Unity.
Ambassador Siyat Osman Ibrahim has been appointed Deputy Chairperson. A career public administrator and diplomat with more than three decades of experience, Ibrahim previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Garissa Investment and Development Authority between 2019 and 2022 and as County Secretary of Lamu County from 2013 to 2017.
Nyali MP Hon. Mohamed Ali, CBS, HSC, has been appointed Deputy Party Leader Designate under Article 101 of the Constitution of Kenya.
Ali, a former Chief Investigations Editor of Jicho Pevu, currently chairs the Finance Committee of the Parliamentary Service Commission and is the founder of the Mohamed Ali Foundation.
Kalonzo also appointed constitutional lawyer Mr Ndegwa Njiru as the party’s inaugural Spokesperson, creating a new office within the WPF leadership hierarchy. Njiru, an advocate of the High Court admitted to the Bar in 2011, is the founder of Ndegwa & Ndegwa Advocates.
Kalonzo said the appointments were part of a broader strategy to strengthen the party as it positions itself for the 2027 political contest.
“That is precisely the discipline the Wiper Patriotic Front needs as we assemble the United Alternative Government-in-Waiting, a coalition wide enough to defeat this regime and disciplined enough to govern after it,” Kalonzo said.
The WPF leader also turned his attention to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), questioning its preparedness to conduct the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo took issue with remarks attributed to IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon suggesting that the Commission may be unable to conduct elections under the prevailing circumstances.
He invoked Section 55B of the Elections Act, arguing that the electoral body has a constitutional and statutory obligation to ensure that the country is adequately prepared for the electoral process.
“If he cannot enforce the law, then he should step aside for someone who can,” Kalonzo said, in an apparent reference to Ethekon.
He further warned against an electoral commission that, in his view, appears hesitant in exercising its constitutional mandate.
“Kenya does not need an electoral commission that flinches. It needs one that counts,” he declared.
The former Vice President also condemned what he described as the resurgence of state-sponsored handouts during by-elections, particularly the practice of organising Kenyans into queues based on gender and age before distributing money or other forms of assistance.
Kalonzo described the practice as “demeaning and undignified,” arguing that such conduct undermines the dignity of citizens and corrodes the integrity of the electoral process.
On the broader opposition strategy, Kalonzo said consultations were continuing among constituent political parties and other formations seeking to join the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
In his capacity as Azimio Party Leader, Kalonzo met representatives of constituent parties and prospective coalition partners in Nairobi on Tuesday, August 4, as part of continuing consultations aimed at forging a united opposition front ahead of the August 2027 elections.
He maintained that the opposition must transcend individual political interests and construct a formidable, coherent and disciplined political coalition capable not only of challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration at the ballot but also of providing an alternative government.
Kalonzo further framed the 2027 contest as a decisive moment for the country’s political direction, insisting that the ultimate verdict would be rendered by Kenyan voters at the ballot box.
“The only conversation that matters is the one Kenyans will have at the ballot on August 10, 2027,” he said.
In defending the appointment of Mohamed Ali to the WPF leadership, Kalonzo portrayed the Nyali legislator as a political figure whose reputation and independence would strengthen the party’s standing.
“And he brings a name that this regime cannot buy and will not intimidate,” Kalonzo said of Ali.
With the opposition machinery now undergoing a significant reconfiguration, Kalonzo is positioning the Wiper Patriotic Front at then centre of an increasingly consequential political realignment ahead of 2027. The appointments, coupled with renewed efforts to consolidate Azimio and other opposition formations, signal an aggressive attempt to transform disparate political interests into a disciplined electoral force capable of mounting a formidable challenge to President William Ruto’s administration.
The emerging contest is therefore shaping up not merely as another electoral duel, but as a high-stakes battle over Kenya’s political direction, governance philosophy and the balance of power beyond August 10, 2027.
