Team Kenya sets sights on Commonwealth glory as Glasgow 2026 campaign begins

Team Kenya has officially been flagged off for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with the Government expressing confidence that the country’s athletes are adequately prepared to uphold Kenya’s rich sporting heritage and reinforce its reputation as one of the world’s leading sporting nations.

Speaking during the unveiling, Elijah Mwangi, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Sports praised the athletes for earning the honour of representing Kenya, saying their selection reflects years of sacrifice, discipline, resilience and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. He noted that the 188-member delegation carries not only the Kenyan flag but also the hopes, aspirations and pride of millions of citizens.

“The Government is satisfied with the team’s preparations, noting that the residential training camps had been characterised by discipline, professionalism and commitment,” he said on behalf of Hon. Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

He commended coaches, technical officials, medical teams, sports scientists and administrators for their dedication in ensuring the athletes travel to Glasgow physically fit, mentally prepared and tactically ready to compete at the highest level.

The PS also applauded the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), the National Steering Committee, sports federations, development partners and sponsors for working collaboratively to create an enabling environment for athletes to excel, observing that international sporting success is achieved through collective effort and effective teamwork.

Reflecting on Kenya’s illustrious history at the Commonwealth Games, Mwangi reminded the athletes that they were stepping into a legacy built by generations of sporting heroes. Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1954, Kenya has amassed 258 medals comprising 91 gold, 80 silver and 87 bronze medals, making the country one of the most successful nations in the history of the Games.

He challenged the athletes to emulate the achievements of Kenyan legends including Seraphino Antao, Kipchoge Keino, Naftali Temu, Ben Jipcho, Julius Yego, Faith Kipyegon, Hellen Obiri, Ferdinand Omanyala, Mary Moraa and Conseslus Kipruto, urging them to seize the opportunity to write their own chapter in the country’s rich sporting history.

While acknowledging the high expectations that accompany Team Kenya at every major international competition, the Principal Secretary encouraged the athletes to remember that true success extends beyond medals. He urged them to compete with honour, humility, discipline and integrity, noting that the values they display throughout the Games will shape Kenya’s image before the international community just as much as their performances.

Mwangi reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening Kenya’s sporting ecosystem through sustained investment in modern sports infrastructure, athlete welfare, high-performance training programmes, sports science, talent identification and grassroots sports development. He said the Government recognises sport as a powerful driver of national unity, youth empowerment, job creation and economic growth, adding that continued investment in the sector remains central to the country’s development agenda.

He further reminded Team Kenya that as they compete in Glasgow, they will carry with them the hopes and prayers of millions of Kenyans. Whether on the athletics track, in the boxing ring, basketball court, swimming pool, cycling track, gymnasium or bowling green, he said the nation would be rallying behind them throughout the competition.

Expressing confidence in the team’s ability to excel, the Principal Secretary urged the athletes to compete with courage, determination and patriotism while proudly wearing the Kenyan colours. He said the Government believes Team Kenya has the talent and resilience to once again deliver outstanding performances on the international stage and inspire future generations of athletes.

Mwangi wished the team a successful and safe campaign, expressing optimism that the athletes would return home with medals while reinforcing Kenya’s standing as a global sporting powerhouse. He called on them to remain united, uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship and make the nation proud as they carry the country’s flag at one of the world’s most prestigious multi-sport events.
