Kenyatta University has embarked on a new chapter of institutional transformation following the installation of Prof. John Okumu as its seventh Vice-Chancellor. The University leadership has pledged to consolidate academic excellence, innovation, sustainability and global competitiveness.
Speaking during his installation and the matriculation of new students at the University’s Graduation Square on Friday, Prof. Okumu outlined an ambitious transformation agenda centred on academic excellence, research and innovation, digital transformation, institutional sustainability, infrastructure development, and enhanced student and staff welfare.
Prof. Okumu said his appointment represented both a profound honour and a significant responsibility, pledging to serve the institution with integrity, transparency, inclusivity and unwavering dedication. He noted that his longstanding association with the University had enabled him to appreciate its historical foundations, institutional strengths and prevailing challenges, while reinforcing his confidence in its considerable potential.
His vision is encapsulated in the theme, “Forging Ahead in Unity, Excellence, Sustainability and Greater Global Impact.” He said the University must move beyond maintaining the status quo and respond decisively to technological disruption, intensifying global competition and evolving societal expectations.
A central component of the new administration’s agenda will be the enhancement of teaching and learning, curriculum relevance and quality assurance, alongside increased investment in postgraduate education and research.
Prof. Okumu said research should translate knowledge into practical solutions in areas such as artificial intelligence, climate change, food security, health, digital technologies, manufacturing, governance and sustainable development.
He also underscored the importance of digital transformation, calling for the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence, data analytics, automation and digital learning to enhance institutional efficiency and service delivery. He emphasised that technological advancement must remain inclusive, ethical, secure and purposeful.
Infrastructure modernisation will also feature prominently, with the University prioritising laboratories, lecture facilities, libraries, ICT infrastructure and student amenities. Prof. Okumu highlighted the ongoing construction of a two G+14 affordable student hostel with a capacity of 2,500 students as part of efforts to improve the student experience.
The University Council Chairperson, Prof. Clara Momanyi, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to providing strategic direction, oversight and institutional support to management. She emphasised mutual respect, accountability, clearly defined roles and collective responsibility as essential to advancing the University’s mission.
Chancellor Ambassador Dr. Francis K. Muthaura, MBS, EGH, meanwhile, reminded the University community that leadership was both an honour and a responsibility. He urged the new administration to preserve what works, improve areas requiring refinement and create new opportunities for future generations.
He challenged the University to embrace diversity, unity and collective responsibility while renewing its commitment to excellence in teaching, research and innovation. He posed the question, “Why not us?”, urging KU to cultivate the confidence and institutional ambition necessary to compete with the world’s leading universities.
As new students were formally welcomed during the matriculation ceremony, Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Bernard Kivunge, ushered the incoming cohort into the University community before Prof. Okumu delivered the matriculation address.
Prof. Okumu called for a united Kenyatta University community capable of building a financially sustainable, academically distinguished, socially responsive, digitally enabled and globally connected institution.
He affirmed that the University’s next chapter would require not only visionary leadership, but also a collective commitment to excellence.
