In Kenya’s fast-paced political scene, few tales grab attention like that of Oketch Salah. He went from near anonymity to mingling with presidents and key players.
Once recognized only in Migori’s streets as a businessman’s son, Salah now travels by jet, lands at funerals via helicopter and shares photos from major meetings that puzzle onlookers. His quick climb, linked to Raila Odinga’s last days, has triggered talk of mystery, devotion and hidden sway in the time after Odinga.
Roots in Migori
Oketch Salah’s path starts away from Nairobi’s State House lights or Harare’s leader homes. Raised in Migori, a town by the lake in western Kenya, he was under his dad Abdi Salah’s influence. Abdi ran Salah Bakery, one of the spot’s oldest spots, and built Migori’s first tall building in the 1970s. That spot showed the family’s local power in an area famed for small mining and trade across borders.
A past classmate remembers Salah at Migori Boys in the 1990s, but he left early, and where he finished school stays unclear. For years, Salah stayed low-key, no big name, no politics crowd or huge business. His days focused on kin and small work, till a quiet tie with Raila Odinga drew him out.
That link, built over time, stayed hidden till Odinga’s health issues pushed Salah ahead. As the Orange Democratic Movement boss fought sickness, staying long in Dubai and India, Salah stayed close. He set up flights, lined up doctors and moved experts, per family tales. In an October 11, 2025, social media share, Salah posted a shot with Odinga: “A day well spent with Baba @RailaOdinga, every moment with him is a lesson in leadership, resilience and patriotism. What message do you want me to pass to him on your behalf?”
Into the close group
Salah’s part in Odinga’s end days went past setup; it was personal. Kin said he spent nights by the leader’s bed, giving aid at weak times. This shift made Salah from hidden pal to seen trusted one. His social spots on X and Facebook started late September 2025, weeks before Odinga’s Oct. 15, 2025, death.
Shares show close times: moves with Odinga and wife Ida, or thoughtful nods. One Oct. 25 clip has Salah at his son Abdinoor’s wedding honoring Odinga, with big names like ODM temp head Dr. Oburu Oginga and Energy chief Opiyo Wandayi there. “Oketch Salah was a good friend and a son of Raila… He was taking care of Raila until the day he breathed his last. Now that Raila is gone, I have inherited him as my son,” Oginga said at the spot, showing Salah’s high place in the Odinga group.
Checks show Salah as more than aide; some call him Odinga’s “taken son” and own doctor, going on health trips out. He comes from Somali-Kenyan roots, adding depth in a land where group ties shape politics. His good Luo speech, noted on X, helped with Odinga’s fans. But this fast show raised questions. Why did a 40s man with no past mark get so key so quick?
Handling loss and new ties

Odinga’s death changed Kenya politics, starting a “wide government” deal between ODM and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance. Salah, at this cross, moved fast on his links. On Oct. 31, he took Kerala doctors — from Odinga’s care — to the Odinga Bondo home, naming it “a gesture of friendship and solidarity… a reminder of his enduring legacy and the bonds he built across borders.”
By November, Salah joined ODM work. He went with heads to Mombasa for the group’s 20th year, posting: “Joined the ODM Brigade today as we mark 20 years of a movement born from struggle, unity and hope. We also celebrate Baba at 80—a lifetime of leadership that has inspired generations.” His back for Oburu Oginga as act head was clear, matching ODM’s Ruto tie. In a clip share, he said: “Canaan is still the destination. ODM is still the vehicle. Oburu is the driver.”
Salah’s show hit high with ODM’s late November vote wins. He praised victors: “ODM’s clean sweep in all three by-elections is a strong statement of unity and strength. The party has once again shown its resolve and surely, Baba is smiling wherever he is.” These gains helped ODM in the wide setup, a 10-point plan Oginga swore to do.
Choppers to top talks
If Salah’s politics moves drew eyes, his life change shocked. On Dec. 6, he came by chopper to Beryl Achieng’ Odinga’s funeral, Raila’s sister, in Bondo. Out sharp dressed, he met grievers like a pro, later posting: “From Kang’o Ka Jaramogi; a glimpse of a solemn yet meaningful day… May her journey home be peaceful.” For area folks, it differed from his quiet past.
Not one time. His X line, a “digital day book” of top meets, shows steady trips. On Dec. 2, he was at State House fete with Ruto and Oginga for wide lawmakers’ pick. “Today, we celebrated the victory of the Broad-Based Government alongside the newly elected MPs and MCAs at State House. We extend our sincere gratitude to His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto and to our able Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga for their steadfast leadership,” he wrote.
Top came Dec. 9, Salah met Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa with his girl. “Honoured to pay a courtesy call on H.E. President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa… We discussed key opportunities in Mining, Energy and Agriculture. Thank you, Your Excellency for the warm reception and guidance,” the post said. Such reach for a plain Kenyan is rare, showing ties past Migori or Odinga kin.
Days later, Dec. 11, home, he met Finance top @Kiptoock, lauding his Odinga aid role. “Back in Kenya after a successful business mission to Zimbabwe. My first engagement was a pivotal meeting with Principal Secretary for Finance… His insights… were invaluable as we charted a course to strengthen the national economic agenda.”
Work goals and wide views
Salah’s climb isn’t just politics; it’s business. He grows family funds into gold dig in Nyatike, a Migori part rich in small digs and guess trade. This field needs politics links, land get, world buyers — stuff Salah builds fast. His Zimbabwe mining talks hint big Africa plans.
As head of Kenya’s Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining group, Salah fits this shift. But his deals stay unclear, adding guess on how Odinga ties turn to money wins.
Puzzle and fight
Even with rise, Salah stays a puzzle. Raila’s sister Ruth Odinga showed confusion: “I don’t know him. When I went to India to see Raila, he returned to Kenya. I don’t know why. Now he is all over with Dr. Oburu Oginga. I have been asked who he is and I can’t explain too.” Her words match wide feel: even in Odinga kin, Salah’s part confuses some.
Bad sayers question his time, coming “too late and too dramatically” in Odinga’s days. Backers see true pal who stayed in hard times, getting spot via “service, sacrifice and compassion.” Oginga’s nod — “our son” — sets this.
Government folks, like speaker Isaac Mwaura and State House’s Hussein Mohamed, no comment on Salah’s place or job. Salah no answer on asks about Nairobi and Harare State House goes.
Public talk on X shows split. One user noted “close confidant” spot, another guessed on quick show. His X spot, over 7,300 follows and blue check, boosts his secret.
Tale goes on
Oketch Salah’s way from Migori hide to leader rings shows Kenya power shifts in after-Raila time. Praised by some as link maker, doubted by others as chance taker, he holds key in new ties. As ODM goes ahead under Oburu and Ruto deal, Salah’s sway — by choppers, talks and online smart — keeps growing.
If by dig work or politics moves, Salah’s path shows skill at turning own bonds to big use. For Kenya, he stays the secret man from nowhere, right in sway center. As one watcher said, his tale “far from complete,” Kenya watches next.
