RTI marks 70th anniversary with graduation of 1,135 technical trainees

RTI has beena critical pillar in producing industry-ready professionals, with skilled workforce needed to support Kenya's expanding railway, maritime transport and logistics sector.

The Railway Training Institute (RTI) celebrated a major milestone on Wednesday as it graduated 1,135 students during its 62nd graduation ceremony, reaffirming its status as one of Kenya’s premier institutions for railway, logistics, maritime and transport training.

Held under the theme “Seven Decades of Excellence in Railway Training for the Future,” the ceremony also marked the Institute’s 70th anniversary, celebrating seven decades of producing highly skilled professionals who continue to serve Kenya and the wider East African region.

The graduation ceremony presided over by Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport Mohamed Daghar, CBS, who lauded RTI for its immense contribution to human capital development and the country’s transport sector. He said the Government remains committed to strengthening technical and vocational education through Competency-Based Education and Training to equip young people with practical, industry-driven skills.

Daghar noted that the continued expansion of railway infrastructure, logistics networks and the Blue Economy will create more opportunities for skilled graduates, positioning RTI as a key institution in supporting Kenya’s economic transformation.

Kenya Railways Board Chairman Abdi Bare Duale described RTI as a centre of excellence that has consistently produced competent professionals since its establishment in 1956. He said continued investment in modern learning facilities, engineering workshops and digital infrastructure is positioning the institution to meet the evolving demands of the transport industry.

Railway Training Institute Director CHRP Asava Kadima applauded the graduands for their resilience and dedication, urging them to uphold integrity, professionalism and innovation as they begin their careers. She said RTI remains committed to nurturing highly skilled professionals capable of driving the future of railway, logistics and maritime transport.

The Chairperson of the RTI Board of Governors reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to strengthening governance, modernising training infrastructure and expanding industry partnerships to ensure the Institute remains globally competitive.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip J. Mainga, EBS, congratulated the graduands and commended RTI for producing industry-ready professionals, noting that the institution remains a critical pillar in developing the skilled workforce needed to support Kenya’s expanding transport and logistics sector.

The graduation ceremony brought together senior government officials, members of the Kenya Railways Board, the RTI Board of Governors, development partners, parents, guardians and invited guests in celebrating the achievements of the Class of 2025/2026.

As RTI marks seven decades of excellence, the institution continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading centre for railway, maritime, logistics and transport training, producing graduates equipped with the knowledge and practical skills required to drive the future of Kenya’s transport sector.
