Democratic Republic of Congo ended a 52 year absence from the FIFA World Cup with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Jamaica after extra time in their intercontinental play off final in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Defender Axel Tuanzebe scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute, sending the Leopards back to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 1974. The win secures DR Congo a place at the expanded 48 team tournament to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The tightly contested match remained goalless after 90 minutes, with both sides struggling to create clear chances. Tuanzebe, playing in one of the most important matches of his career, emerged as the unlikely hero when it mattered most.

DR Congo showed early intent, with Cedric Bakambu twice finding the net only for both efforts to be ruled out for offside. Jamaica gradually settled into the match but found it difficult to break down a disciplined Congolese defense.

The breakthrough came from a set piece situation early in extra time. A well delivered corner into the box caused confusion in the Jamaican defense before the ball deflected into Tuanzebe’s path. The defender reacted quickly and forced the ball over the line from close range.

Celebrations were briefly paused as officials reviewed the goal for a possible handball. After a short delay, the goal was confirmed.

Jamaica, who were hoping to reach their second World Cup after their appearance in 1998, struggled to respond. Despite pushing forward late in the game, they failed to create a clear opportunity to equalise.

Defensive discipline secures victory

After taking the lead, DR Congo remained composed and organised. Captain Chancel Mbemba led the backline effectively, while goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi stayed alert when required.

Jamaica’s attacking players, including Leon Bailey and Kasey Palmer, were largely kept quiet throughout the match. Their attempts to break through were consistently denied by a well structured defensive setup.

DR Congo had opportunities to extend their lead late on, with Edo Kayembe missing a clear chance during a counter attack. However, Tuanzebe’s goal proved enough to secure victory.

The result reflects the team’s defensive strength, which has been a key feature under head coach Sebastien Desabre.

DR Congo’s journey to qualification has been long and demanding. Their campaign began in November 2023 and included a series of challenging matches against strong African opposition.

After finishing second behind Senegal in their group, they progressed through African play offs, overcoming teams such as Cameroon and Nigeria. Their ranking allowed them to advance directly to the intercontinental play off final.

The victory in Mexico marks the culmination of a steady rebuilding process under Desabre, who has focused on discipline, organisation and unity since taking charge in 2022.

For DR Congo, the achievement carries deep historical significance. Their only previous World Cup appearance came in 1974, when the country competed as Zaire in West Germany.

That tournament ended in disappointment, with three defeats and 14 goals conceded. A heavy loss to Yugoslavia remains one of the most difficult moments in African football history.

More than five decades later, a new generation now has the chance to reshape that legacy.

Tuanzebe, who made his international debut in June 2024, described the qualification as a proud moment for both his family and his country. Born in Bunia, a region affected by ongoing conflict, his journey reflects the broader story behind the team’s success.

DR Congo’s resurgence has also been supported by the inclusion of players developed abroad. Several members of the squad previously represented other nations at youth level before committing to the Leopards.

This approach has strengthened the team by combining international experience with local talent. It has also provided greater depth and tactical flexibility.

The victory sparked celebrations across DR Congo and among its global diaspora. For many, the qualification represents more than just a sporting achievement.

In a country that has faced decades of instability and hardship, football continues to serve as a source of unity and pride.

DR Congo will now compete in Group K at the 2026 World Cup, where they are scheduled to face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan. Their opening match is set for 17 June in Houston.

While the challenge ahead is significant, the Leopards enter the tournament with confidence. Their disciplined performances and growing cohesion suggest a team capable of competing at a higher level.

After 52 years of waiting, DR Congo return to the World Cup with renewed belief and a chance to write a new chapter in their football history.
